The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center provides a rich and collaborative environment for basic, clinical, and translational research and has a diverse faculty. The Solid Tumor Program is an integral component of the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, and currently includes 9 faculty members, 4 of whom are primarily basic/translational research-focused, as well as 4 advance practice providers (APPs). Additionally, the Solid Tumor Program partners closely with our surgical, radiation oncology, and radiology teams to provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art care for pediatric and AYA solid tumor patients. About the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center
The successful candidate will join one of the strongest pediatric hematology/oncology programs in the country.
In 2024, the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center was ranked No. 12 in the nation for Pediatric Cancer by US News and World Report.
The Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center has 125 faculty members and approximately 50 APPs conducting basic, translational, and clinical research related to pediatric oncology and hematology disorders, with expertise in leukemias, lymphomas, brain tumors, neuroblastoma, sarcomas, rare tumors, renal tumors, CAR T-cell therapies, hemoglobinopathies and hemophilia..
Aflac is a major contributor to the success of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), and is annually among the top 4 institutions in therapeutic and total enrollments. Additionally, Aflac solid tumor faculty hold multiple leadership positions on clinical trials, within disease-based committees, and more broadly within COG.
The Solid Tumor Program saw over 150 newly diagnosed solid tumor patients in 2024, including almost 50 patients with sarcomas and 25 with renal tumors.
We have a large, multi-disciplinary sarcoma program, serving both pediatric and AYA patients, which includes a Musculoskeletal Survivor Clinic.
Our established Relapsed/Refractory Neuroblastoma Program has given over 100 MIBG infusions over the last 10 years, and is one of the few MIBG treatment centers in the US with the ability to treat patients in the PICU, allowing for more adequate sedation in younger patients.
The Aflac Developmental Therapeutics Program offers a wide portfolio of clinical trials from cooperative groups, industry partners, and investigator-initiated studies, and has a larger referral base in the southeastern United States. Aflac is a member of the COG Pediatric Early Phase Clinical Trials Network (PEP-CTN), NANT, TACL, and PBTC, and our faculty have leadership roles within these cooperative groups. The novel translational research conducted by Aflac solid tumor researchers combined with strong industry relationships and philanthropic support in the Atlanta area makes for a ripe environment for the generation of investigator-initiated early phase clinical trials.
The Aflac Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program accepts 6 fellows each year for intensive clinical and research training in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology with ample teaching opportunities for faculty.
The physician in this position will devote the majority of their effort to clinical responsibilities (0.6-0.8 clinical FTE) in the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Clinical coverage will be at Arthur M. Blank Hospital and will include both outpatient and inpatient responsibilities, including call, and may be adjusted depending on service needs. This physician will:
Provide exemplary clinical service and assure that patients cared for by you receive only the highest quality care.
In collaboration with program leaders, contribute to and expand the clinical program and patient services in pediatric solid tumor and general oncology.
Devote the remainder of their effort (amount dependent upon research interests and funding) to clinical research, preferably with our Developmental Therapeutics Program.
Play a role in the education and training program of the Pediatric Hem/Onc/BMT Division, including access to and involvement with medical students, residents, fellows, and occasionally physicians in practice.
Successful candidates will have:
MD, MD/PhD, or DO degrees
Must be board eligible or board certified in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology
Must be currently licensed as a physician and eligible for licensure as a physician in the state of Georgia
A history of clinical excellence/achievement
Clinical research experience preferred with a focus on early phase clinical trials
