SUMMARY: Seeking an experienced Hematology/Oncology APRN or PA to support our attending physicians with coverage of the 6 Tower inpatient hematology oncology unit at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Under indirect supervision and working interdependently with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers, provides a broad range of nurse practitioner services following established policies and protocols. Performs a variety of functions and technical procedures necessary for patient admission, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, and outcome evaluation. Participates in performance improvement, research, and educational activities. Assists physicians with clinical documentation. Day-shift position, Monday-Friday.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Takes initial patient histories and performs physical examinations.
Initiates, documents, and communicates the plan of care and follows up to ensure complete screening and preparation of patients.
Attends Hem/Onc inpatient rounds daily (Monday - Friday) with Attendings, Fellows, and residents
Evaluates and manages assigned patients on 6 Tower Oncology Floor - including history, physical exam, progress notes, and order entry
Writes orders for medications, laboratory work, and diagnostic tests.
Interprets laboratory and test results.
Upon discharge, documents discharge summaries, prescriptions, and any referrals required
Informs patients of the necessary post-discharge care instructions.
Provides teaching and emotional support to patients and families.
Triages and refers patients for further care based on severity of illness and symptoms.
Utilizes written guidelines/protocol for clinical decision making and management.
Prepares timely, legible, and complete documentation of all patient care as provided by law, regulation, and established policy.
Demonstrates an awareness of and sensitivity to patient/family rights.
Applies safety principles as identified by established policy.
Provides education and continuity/quality of care guidance to fellows and rotating pediatric residents on floor
Participates in continuing education to continually improve skills and abilities and stay abreast of current technologies/practices.
Ensures compliance with legal issues including but not limited to patient confidentiality and risk management; ensures compliance with DNV, federal, state, and local regulations.
Exhibits a high degree of courtesy, tact, and poise when interacting with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals.
Adjusts to fluctuating peaks in patient flow, acuity, and other operational demands while maintaining quality.
Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
Ensures adherence to Oncology Institute regulatory bodies including but not limited to FACT, COG, ACS and CoC.
REQUIREMENTS:
Graduate from an accredited school of nursing or PA school.
Current license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in Florida, required.
Current BLS certification, PALS certification required.
Two to four years related experience or equivalent, hematology/oncology experience strongly preferred.
Ability to understand and adhere to established policies, procedures, and protocols.
Demonstrated competence in reacting to and handling emergencies.
Able to work collaboratively with multiple health professionals in a busy and complex environment using tact, diplomacy, and discipline.
