Description

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Cancer and Kidney Biology Hong Lab

Summary of the Fellowship:

The Hong Lab (www.thehonglab.org) is seeking highly-motivated postdoctoral fellows to join a team of scientists using functional genomics to study the development and consequences of abnormal development in the kidney, identify new biology and therapeutic targets in childhood and young adult kidney/brain cancers. These include Wilms Tumor and cancers involving the SWI/SNF chromatin modifying complex such as Renal Medullary Carcinoma, Rhabdoid Tumor and Atypical Teratoid/ Rhabdoid Tumor.

Our research laboratory is housed within the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Emory University and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta in the Health Science Research Building. Fellows will have access to resources within the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, the Winship Cancer Institute, the Pediatric Research Alliance along with collaborators at Georgia Institute of Technology. Furthermore, fellows are encouraged to observe the clinical aspects of pediatric oncology to understand the impact of our work on our patients.

Funding for positions has been secured and will come initially from grants and institutional funds (e.g. Department of Defense, American Cancer Society and Emory University).

In addition, those who are interested in developmental kidney biology and are U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals, or permanent U.S. residents may be eligible for the Emory ATLANTIS Kidney, Urology and Hematology Research Training program https://med.emory.edu/departments/medicine/divisions/renal-medicine/research/atlantis-training-program/index.html

Requirements:

A minimum of a Doctoral degree (PhD, MD, MD/PhD or equivalent) is required, preferably in Developmental Biology, Genetics and Molecular Biology or Cancer Biology. Ideal applicants should have less than 1 years of postdoctoral experience. The candidate should possess strong interpersonal communication and analytical skills with written and oral fluency in English. Further, the ideal candidate will be motivated, detailed, goal-oriented and possess excellent organizational skills.

Further, Those who are interested in integrating research and teaching and are U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals, or permanent U.S. residents may be eligible for the Emory FIRST IRACDA Program. https://med.emory.edu/education/postdoctoral-training/first/about-us/index.html

Summary of the Mentor:

Dr. Hong is an Assistant Professor in Pediatrics with an Endowed Investigatorship focused on the study of high-risk childhood kidney and brain cancers. He was previously on the faculty at Harvard Medical School. He completed his post-graduate and post-doctoral training at Boston Children's Hospital, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT. His mentorship style is to meet weekly with postdoctoral fellows with the goal for the fellows to become independent investigators (either in academia or in industry). This will be through a mix of giving presentations, meeting with donors, learning how to write grants, identifying independent research projects, writing manuscripts together as well as training recent college graduates along with undergraduate and graduate students.

Summary of the Environment:

Located in Atlanta, Emory University, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center brings together world renowned clinicians, innovative researchers and dedicated professionals in the common mission of conquering cancer in children and young adults. Combining extremely talented people with the best technologies in a genuinely positive environment, we provide compassionate and comprehensive care to patients of all ages; we conduct research that advances treatment; we educate tomorrows' physician/researchers; we reach out to underserved members of our community; and we work with amazing partners, including Georgia Institute of Technology and the Georgia Research Alliance.
