Serves as the Section Chief of Hematology/Oncology Section/Medical Service and will participate in research, patient care, teaching, and administrative activities of the Division, as assigned. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement: Board eligible or board certified in Hematology/ Oncology Strong background and ongoing interest in Hematology and Oncology Excellent skills in patient care and teaching as related to internal medicine and Hematology/Oncology Preferred Experience: Preferred 2 to 3 years of Hematology/Oncology experience with 1 year of leadership experience. ["Specific anticipated responsibilities include: Providing patient care in the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System. The position is that of the Section Chief, hematologist/oncologist with both in patient and outpatient responsibilities for patients with solid tumor and hematologic malignancies, along with benign hematologic and internal medicine disorders. Full diagnostic evaluation, decision-making regarding if and how to give chemotherapy and other treatments, and extensive counseling of patients are among the position's responsibilities. This physician interacts daily with the hematology/oncology staff to assure timely and high-quality patient care and to augment staff education. Teaching medical school students and residents in various settings, small groups and at the bedside in various settings, stressing problem-based learning is a critical part of the job description. In addition, this physician must mentor Hematology/Oncology fellows in the inpatient, outpatient and occasionally in the research arena. This physician is an integral component of the core curriculum and administration of the Hematology/Oncology fellowship program, and must have superb teaching, mentoring and administrative skills. Inpatient clinical duties will include overseeing the trainees who manage these acutely ill patients. In the setting of daily bedside rounds, stressing evidence-based decision making, he/she will be responsible for diagnostic and therapeutic plans, overseeing treatment and follow-up as appropriate. In the outpatient setting, this physician will supervise hematology/oncology trainees and will maintain his/her own panel of hematology/oncology patients. Teaching by role modeling, is particularly important, as is the coordination of care among the many components of the multidisciplinary aspect of hematology/oncology patient care delivery. This physician will be involved in the thoughtful counseling of patients and families in this clinic setting. This physician will supervise fellows in the performance of bone marrow biopsies and intrathecal administration of chemotherapy. Research may involve clinical studies, either physician initiated or multi-institutional collaboratives. This requires administrative responsibility to collect and appropriately maintain patient data and to manage the process required for clinical trial approval as well as oversight of clinical trial personnel. Supervision of Hematology/Oncology staff Participate in the Focused Professional Practice Evaluations (FPPE)/Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluations (OPPE) process. Participate in health care record reviews (routine medical record reviews). Demonstrating Clinical Management includes indirect patient care: open encounter and consult management, Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) documentation rules and requirements, adherence to clinic procedures for patient scheduling and access, ensuring staff productivity, oversight of relevant performance measures, and participation in the development of the new focus on the Medical Home and Patient Centric Care, Utilization, Quality, and Patient Safety oversight, process improvement (system redesign).
