The New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS), is a leader in the provision of rural health care, opening its first VA-staffed community based outpatient clinic (CBOC) in Farmington, New Mexico, followed by clinics in Artesia, Gallup, Raton, Silver City, Rio Rancho and Santa Fe. In recent years, the NMVAHCS has contracted with Valor Healthcare, Primary Care Solutions and Ben Archer Health Center to provide Veterans access to clinics throughout New Mexico and southwest Colorado. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement: The New Mexico VA Medical Center is an active teaching hospital affiliated with the University of New Mexico. Qualified candidates must be eligible for a faculty appointment at the University of New Mexico based upon qualifications and experience. Preferred Experience: Clinical & Research focus in Early Phase I, Melanoma Sarcoma, Brain, GI. These are preferences but not required. Experience with residency and fellowship education. Experience in Clinical & Translational Research Experience working with learners, experience working with clinical trials. The New Mexico VA Health Care System and the University of New Mexico (UNM) Cancer Center are seeking applications for the position of staff physician in an expanding Section of Hematology/Oncology at the NMVAHCS. The NMVAHCS Hematology/Oncology program is the major academic affiliate of the UNM Division of Hematology/Oncology and the UNM Cancer Center, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. This individual will also collaborate closely with the Divisional and Cancer Center Leadership at UNM. The Staff Physician, Section of Hematology/Oncology will have a major teaching role within the Division including its fellowship program. Qualified applicants will have an MD, current medical license and be board-certified or eligible in Hematology and/or Oncology. The ideal candidate will be suitable for academic appointment at UNM at the level of associate or full professor, as evidenced by a strong track record of academic and clinical excellence. Qualified candidates must be eligible for a faculty appointment in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of New Mexico based upon qualifications and experience. Major responsibilities and duties of the position include but are not limited to: Direct, high quality patient care with particular emphasis on the ability to function in a multidisciplinary team Diagnostic workup, treatment and follow-up of patients with blood disorders or malignancies Participation in educational programs of Hematology/Oncology and Internal Medicine. Participation in quality assurance programs and chart reviews. Didactic and bedside teaching Supervision of medical students, residents and Hematology/Oncology fellows Active participation in the conduct of clinical trials and other scholarly activities Adherence to quality measures and Standards Facilitate academic and research collaboration with the Division of Hematology/Oncology Preferred Criteria/Experience: Residency in Internal Medicine Hematology/Oncology Fellowship in an ACGME accredited training program. ABIM Board eligibility/certification in Internal Medicine and Hematology and Medical Oncology. Demonstrated interest in teaching Track record of excellence in teaching, e.g., recognition from trainees and/or awards for teaching. Scholarly activities including research interests (clinical, translational or basic science) in any area of Hematology or Oncology.
