In addition to its hospitals, Duke Health has an extensive, geographically dispersed network of outpatient facilities that include primary care offices, urgent care centers, multi-specialty clinics and outpatient surgery centers.

 

Oncology - Hospitalist Physician

Position Summary

Duke's Division of Hematologic Malignancies & Cellular Therapy, Division of Medical Oncology, and the Duke Cancer Institute are actively recruiting for a Hospitalist Physician to integrate into our two separate oncology inpatient services - Malignant Hematology Service and Medical Oncology / Solid Tumor Service.  Hospitalist Physicians in Oncology are clinicians and/or clinician educators who provide clinical care for adult oncology patients admitted at Duke University Hospital, and teach staff, graduate medical trainees, and medical students on inpatient educational rotations.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Oncology Hospitalist physicians will supervise teams of house staff and/or advanced practice providers (APPs) engaged in direct patient care activities and medical/clinical practice as the principal component of his/her overall professional responsibility. During times of high census, the Oncology Hospitalist may need to engage in direct patient care activities. Patient care activities will include, but are not be limited to:

  • Assessment, evaluation, pain and symptom management, care planning and modification, medications/therapeutic recommendations, and medical decision making.
  • Direct contact and consultation with patient family members, friends, advocates, and others to ensure effective communication of patient status and care plans, and to encourage/support an open visitor- friendly environment within the medical/hospital environment.
  • Extensive and on-going communications with primary oncology teams who routinely manage the cancer care of patients in the outpatient setting.
  • Day-to-day patient contact/rounding/care management that actively encourages and includes professional input from all members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Accurate and timely completion of all clinical and professional records and documentation to assure compliance with local, state and federal regulatory, licensure and accreditation requirements.
  • Work to create a positive work culture within cross-departmental teams and align this work with other Oncology initiatives.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

 

Qualifications

Education      

  • Graduate of an accredited MD or DO medical school
  • Completion of Internal Medicine Residency Program
  • Hematology/Oncology Fellowship preferred, but not required

 

License

  • License to practice medicine issued by the NCMB
  • DEA License issued by State of NC

 

Certification

  • Board Certified in Internal Medicine (ABIM) required
  • Board Certified in Hematology and/or Oncology is preferred, but not required.

 

Experience    

  • Hospitalist and/or Hematology/Oncology experience preferred but welcome new grad applicants

 

Shifts/Hours

  • 16 shifts per month, approximately 7am - 7 pm
