The VAMC in Memphis, Tennessee is recruiting for a Deputy Chief of Medicine to serve as a full-time Medical Service physician. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Qualifications: Two years of physician supervision and management experience. Experience in developing and leading quality improvement projects (e.g., committee Chair) and, exceptional organizational skills. The position is accountable to the Chief of Medicine, for assuring the most effective delivery of state-of-the-art care by meeting or exceeding compliance standards of 12 Medicine Subspecialties (Cardiology, Nephrology, Hospitalist, Infectious Diseases, Gastroenterology, Dermatology, Hematology, Oncology, Rheumatology, Allergy, Immunology, Endocrinology) and Neurology. Duties may include but are not limited to: The Deputy Chief of Medicine Service (DCOM) will work in conjunction with the Chief of Medicine (COM) and Sections of the Medical Service to provide evidence-based, patient-centered care to our Veterans. Assist with and/or lead various process improvement projects of the Medical Service. Assist with resolving daily urgent issues that arise with providers and patients in the Medical Service. Assist with and/or lead required VHA initiatives within the Medical Service. Lead various administrative duties assigned by the Chief of Medicine (COM.) Demonstrates sound decision-making skills in both clinical and administrative areas. Serves as a preceptor to Residents, Medical Students and Fellows in his or her specialty area. Provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and treatment of disease. Possesses strong interpersonal and communication skills that enable him/her to establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, families, members of the Medical Service, and members of other Services at the Memphis VA. Assist the COM in facilitating collaboration with the various Services at the Memphis VA. Work within the goals and vision of the Medical Service as are determined by the COM, Chief of Staff, and Facility Director. Adhere to stated policies and provide timely documentation of clinical notes. Hands on clinical work in addition to quality-improvement and operational leadership in all aspects of the Medical Service. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that clinical operations and health information practices of the Service are being measured for quantity and quality of the work performed, and conducted in continuing compliance with the laws, regulations and standards which govern those activities, the reasonable expectations of VHA's business partners, and the highest standards of Compliance and Business Integrity. This may require working with several databases that measure quality and productivity within the VA. The incumbent is expected to assist section chiefs within Medical Service to meet the performance measures and VHA Core Competencies specific for his/her section. The DCOM is delegated full responsibility and accountability for supervising clinical services, Section/Service chiefs, and Administrative Officers as assigned by the COM and/or COS. S/he makes decisions on problems presented by assigned subordinate supervisors (i.e., Medical Service Section Chiefs), and evaluates those supervisors with annual proficiency/performance reviews and makes performance pay recommendations.
