On behalf of Dr. Alexander Bassuk, Chair of Pediatrics and Physician-in-Chief at University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, CareerPhysician, LLC, a national leader in academic pediatric executive search, has initiated a national search to identify transformational leadership candidates for the role of Division Director of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology. The new leader will be charged with the creation and implementation of a strategic plan that will guide the division into the future. With an established commitment to clinical and academic missions and an established resource package, we believe the role to be among the best legacy leadership roles available in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology.

The named Director will benefit from the support of a funded Endowed Chair and have the responsibility to advance the regional and national reputation of the cancer program through expansion, utilizing existing funding mechanisms to create infrastructure and recruit talented faculty in research, education, and clinical missions.  Institutional leaders are invested and committed to providing the named Director fiscal support to implement a vision to become a world class, nationally recognized Pediatric Cancer Program by providing excellent patient care and becoming a leader in cancer research.

The department of pediatrics, in conjunction with University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (“UIHC”)/Carver College of Medicine (“CCOM”), seeks to recruit a director who will continue to further this institution’s regional relationships, expand the existing BMT program, enhance the current research portfolio, and promote a culture that fosters investment and mentorship of junior faculty while achieving prominence in each aspect the academic missions.

Opportunity Highlights:

  • The named director will be appointed an endowed chair to support growth in research and recruitment of talented faculty to further enhance the opportunities for extramural funding and clinical excellence.
  • The division is home to ten (10) physician faculty with established subspecialty service lines in hematology, leukemia/lymphoma, neuro oncology, solid tumors, BMT, MBM MIBG, Psycho-Oncology, Survivorship, Comprehensive Brain Tumor, Sickle Cell, and AYA programs.
  • The hematology-oncology research program is home to a recently renovated Dance Marathon Lab, which provides dedicated lab space for basic science research, and has resulted in increased NIH funding for the division. Additionally, the cancer program launched a non-COG clinical trial program which continues to grow.
  • The University of Iowa is home to an ACGME accredited fellowship program that accepts two fellows per year and trains a total of six fellows at one time.
  • We believe this to be one of the top leadership positions in Pediatric Cancer, offering the selected leader unwavering support for programmatic growth, demonstrated by the number of approved faculty and staff positions as well as the collaborative culture between adult and pediatric programs, as well as basic science researchers.
  • Academic promotion occurs through the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and an Associate Professor rank or above is preferred. In addition, the ideal leader will possess experience in leading successful clinical or bench research, as well as have had success in quality, outcomes, and access initiatives.
  • The department and hospital are committed to providing the selected leader a highly competitive compensation and benefits package which will factor in faculty rank, prior experience, and research contribution.
