The University of Minnesota, Department of Pediatrics, seeks a candidate for a full-time position as an Assistant Professor on the Academic Track in the Division of Clinical Behavioral Neuroscience as a Pediatric Psychologist.

About the Appointment:

  • To provide comprehensive psychological services to children and adolescents with various developmental, psychological, and medical disorders including chronic illness, genetic disorders, hematology/oncology patients, organ transplantation recipients, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

  • Position entails executing in-depth evaluations, written and oral feedback to families, related providers, and schools regarding test results and recommendations for treatment and educational planning.

  • Focus is placed on both intervention and assessment, as well as providing consultation to health practitioners and parents in regard to behavioral management and parent/child relationship issues.

  • Additional job activities include conducting various outreach activities for the medical professional community, and participating in weekly seminars and various other didactic experiences.

  • Finally, the position involves a scholarly track including emphasis on research and grant writing, as well as providing supervision to trainees.

About the Department:

The mission of the Department of Pediatrics is to generate new knowledge through research, to apply this new knowledge to the highest quality health care for the prevention and treatment of illness in children, and to provide the best possible education of the next generation of medical students, physicians, and other health professionals in childhood disease prevention, treatment, research, and advocacy. Through this mission the Department seeks to improve the lives of children in our community, nation, and the world.

About the Division:

The Division of Clinical Behavioral Neuroscience is comprised of four sections: Pediatric Psychology, Pediatric Neuropsychology, Autism and Neurodevelopment and Developmental/Behavior Pediatrics.

All members of the Division are committed to research, often involving collaboration with faculty members in the Department of Pediatrics, or other areas of the University, to advance understanding of normal and abnormal neurological function. Because of the broad commitment to Clinical Neuroscience, we expect the Division of Clinical Behavioral Neuroscience to enhance all of its programs through the addition of new faculty members as well as the increase in service, educational and research endeavors over the next few years.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Consultative services include assessment of developmental disorders, psychological management of patients with acute and chronic illnesses, management of common problems in childhood, parent counseling and developmental guidance, and preparation for medical procedures and hospitalizations for young children.

  • Provide psychological and/or neuropsychological assessment of children in outpatient settings.

  • Provide supportive communication with family members, school, and other professionals involved in the child's care.

  • Participate in team conferences and provide consultative services on and off site.

  • Provide therapy for children and adolescents with a variety of medical and psychosocial conditions. May also provide family or group therapy.

  • Collaboratively work as a positive, constructive team member

  • Supervise clinical psychology interns and postdoctoral fellows in both assessment and therapy.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Position requires a Ph.D./PsyD in psychology from an APA and/or CPA accredited program, internship training, and minimum 1-year post-doctoral training in pediatric psychology is required.

  • Applicants must be license-eligible in the state of Minnesota.

  • Experience with both chronic medical populations and neurodevelopmental disorders, as well as experience with individual therapy preferred.

  • Additionally, excellent organizational skills, strong oral and written communication skills and computer proficiency are required.

  • This individual must be able to work independently and as a member of a team.
