Description

This position is largely involved in clinical service in the specialty of hematology, primarily with regard to the care of individuals with sickle cell disease in the Georgia Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at Grady Health System. We expect you to be an active participant in the growth and development of the sickle cell program as it becomes a leader in the field. Also, we expect you to participate actively in the classical hematology clinic at Emory University Hospital Midtown. Your participation in both these programs will involve professional patient care services, collaboration with program leaders and colleagues, attendance at various departmental and national meetings, and also education and clinical investigation as appropriate, necessary, and practical.

As appropriate, we expect you to submit applications for Career Development and Developmental Research Awards. This would include enrolling patients to clinical trials, aiding with specimen collection and initiating novel clinical trials.

We expect you to serve as an outstanding teacher and provide supervision of residents and Hematology and Medical Oncology fellows as appropriate and necessary. You may be asked to give lectures as appropriate and also serve as a preceptor for residents and fellows in the outpatient clinics.

Your initial clinical responsibilities will include three half-day outpatient clinic sessions per week. We expect you to staff the adult sickle cell clinic at Grady Health System up to one full day per week and also support related acute care services. In addition, a half day clinic at Emory University Hospital Midtown seeing benign hematology patients, is expected. We expect you to provide inpatient coverage on the Hematology inpatient consultation service at least 4 half-months (8 weeks) per year at Grady Hospital (6 weeks) and Emory University Hospital Midtown (2 weeks).

The amount of time you would be required to devote to clinical activities might be adjusted in the future, pending other professional and research activities. You will be expected to interact closely with members of the Division of Hematology and with Emory and other referring physicians to build a strong patient referral base. We also expect you to comply with practice and facility policies/requirements (safety, timely documentation, consent, etc.). Candidates for this position should be Board Certified or Board eligible in Hematology/Oncology and eligible for licensure in Georgia.
