The VA Loma Linda Healthcare system in Loma Linda, CA seeks an energetic and skilled Hematologist/Oncologist at the Multidisciplinary Cancer Center. VA Loma Linda is a teaching facility and therefore board certification in Hematology/Oncology is required for this opportunity. The incumbent reports to the Chief of Hematology-Oncology. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. We have high expertise in colorectal, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, ENT, urologic, and thoracic surgery. The Staff Hematologist/Oncologist is responsible for providing comprehensive care in the Cancer Center. Duties of this position include but are not limited to: Provide expert consultation and treatment to patients in the outpatient Hematology/Oncology clinic; as well as provide feedback and inpatient consultation with the other services within the Loma Linda VA Medical Center. Evaluate, triage, and prioritize requests from Primary Care providers and others for outpatient Hematology/Oncology subspecialty consultations. Obtain medical histories, conduct physical examinations, order and evaluate appropriate laboratory testing, and plan and prescribe treatment for patients. Coordinate medical management and care with Primary Care providers and other medical personnel in a multidisciplinary health care delivery system. Perform administrative tasks as assigned, such as peer reviews and Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluations (OPPE). Provide Hematology/Oncology on-call services as assigned. Physician will be required to attend staff meetings, serves on committees, teams, workgroups, and peer reviews as requested. Completes CME, VA Training, HIPAA, Security training, and other training mandatory trainings. In additional to the duties listed above the Physician will provide clinical care within the Hematology/Oncology privileges approved by MEC. Ability to perform initial histories and physical examinations on outpatients; make assessments and use appropriate diagnostic evaluations; implement timely and appropriate treatment. Rounding, supervision, and teaching with students, residents, fellows on the inpatient ward as well as outpatient clinic. Covers call rotation with other physicians. Participates in tele-medicine services between the main medical center and the various Community Based Outpatient Clinics. Assist with the diagnosis and interpretation of pulmonary nodules. Counsel and advise patients diagnosed with malignancy. Orders diagnostic studies and interprets laboratory tests, EKGs, and radiologic tests. Provides ongoing outpatient care for assigned case load. Prescribes and refills medications within the defined scope of practice. Provides education and counseling of patients and families. Overseeing Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners.
