The Department of Medicine at the Durham VA Medical Center is recruiting additional MD, DO or MD/PhD academic Oncologists or Hematologists to expand the Tele-Oncology clinical services delivered to Veterans locally and regionally. An affiliate academic appointment may be available at a Medical Center affiliated with an NCI-designated Cancer Center. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: An affiliate academic appointment may be available at a Medical Center affiliated with an NCI-designated Cancer Center for board certified candidates Ideal candidates will have a strong clinical and academic interest in one of the following areas: breast cancer, gastrointestinal malignancies, genitourinary malignancies, thoracic malignancies, hematological malignancies, benign hematological conditions, skin malignancies, sarcomas Experience in research, particularly clinical or health outcomes research Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: In the process of providing patient care, the work involves regular and recurring periods of walking, standing, sitting, bending, pulling, lifting, reaching and carrying. Manual dexterity is required to operate medical equipment and perform activities such as pulmonary and critical care procedures, treatments and computerized medical record documentation. Education Debt Reduction Program (Student Loan Repayment): Authorized\nEDRP Authorized: Contact Christina Leach, christina.leach@va.gov, the EDRP Coordinator for questions/assistance.\nRecruitment Incentive: Authorized\nPay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases\nPaid Time Off: 50-55 days of annual paid time offer per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)\nRetirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA\nInsurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)\nLicensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory\nCME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification)\nMalpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided\nContract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting Duties include, but are not limited to: Keeps abreast of latest trends, skills, procedures, and protocols relevant in the area of specialty and serves as a resource person for the medical center staff Develop and maintain expertise in one or more subspecialty areas of Hematology/Oncology Reviews outpatient hematology/oncology consults received by the service and affects an appropriate resolution through completion of electronic consult, scheduling to the outpatient hematology oncology clinics, and/or referral of the consult to another Hematology/Oncology provider Perform comprehensive history and physical examinations; establish medical diagnoses and appropriately enter, transcribe, &/or execute orders Order and interpret necessary diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms Formulate treatment plans and monitor patient progress Document patient encounters in a timely fashion Promotes, directs, evaluates, and is responsible for the management of safe patient care for patients being treated in the chemotherapy infusion unit including writing orders for administration of blood products and chemotherapy agents Responds to requests for consultations and scheduling special tests and studies; communicate and coordinate care among consultants to guide patient care Provides Hematology/Oncology care by telehealth Attends tumor board as assigned by the Chief of Hematology/Oncology Discuss and document advance care planning (end-of-life decision-making) Arranges for chemotherapy access procedures and biopsies with Interventional Radiology and Surgery Assists, as needed with marrow transplant (BMT) referrals by arranging appropriate clinical work-up, documentation, and transplant application submission to respective VA facility administrative authorities, VACO, and the respective VA BMT facilities Discuss proposed procedures, including the attendant risks and potential complications, and obtain the appropriate informed consent from patients; this includes obtaining informed consents for blood transfusions Attends tumor board as assigned by the Director of National TeleOncology Work Schedule: To be determined\nTelework: This position is 100% remote."]
