The Vannie E. Cook Jr. Children's Cancer and Hematology Clinic in McAllen, TX is seeking a full-time Research Nurse II.  The clinic was established in 2001 through a joint effort of the Vannie Cook Foundation, Baylor College of Medicine, and Texas Children's Hospital in order to provide local pediatric hematology/oncology care to the under-served children of the Rio Grande Valley.  The clinic is an extension of the Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center and is the region's first and only pediatric cancer and hematology treatment facility.

Nurse will function as the Long Term Survivor Patient Care Navigator and will be responsible for patient care and research related activities.  Duties will include screening, enrollment, data collection and monitoring of research participants.   Candidate will be interacting with Rio Grande Valley pediatric cancer patients and their families.  Position is located in McAllen TX.

Job duties are as follows:

  • Performs responsibilities in a manner that promotes quality and safe patient care and customer service.
  • Adheres to the scope of practices as defined by the Texas Nurse Practice Act.
  • Schedules study visits and meetings related to studies.
  • Collects study specimens, administers medications, and follows patients progress through care.
  • Maintains patient charts and medical records.
  • Ensures the clinical studies are conducted in accordance with guidelines of the FDA and other regulatory agencies.
  • Serves as a liaison and distributes research information to faculty, research staff, principle investigator, and others as required.
  • May assist in developing the clinical trial agreement.
  • Functions as Long Term Survivor Patient Care Navigator
    • Educates patients that complete cancer treatment on the importance of long-term survivor follow-up.            
    • Performs outreach to re-engage lost to follow-up survivors in medical care. 
    • Enrolls and consents interested participants in Long Term Survivor research projects.       
    • Collects data on Long Term Survivors including information on barriers to seeking aftercare.
    • Identifies and provides grant-supported resources to overcome barriers to care.   
    • Abstracts and enters diagnosis/treatment data into Passport for Care. 
    • Provides PFC mobile health application access to survivors at the first LTS visit.
    • Serves as point of contact/resource for survivors via the PFC messaging application.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
  • Two years of relevant experience as a licensed Registered Nurse (RN). 
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
  • Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Certification Preferred
  • Spanish language fluency preferred
