Phoenix Children’s Hospital and the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders seeks a Director of Pediatric Stem Cell Transplantation. The successful candidate should have several years of experience in the clinical care of pediatric stem cell transplant patients, prior experience with academic leadership and an active research program with track record of obtaining external funding.

Responsibilities include oversight for the Clinical and Quality programs in BMT at PCH, participation in collaborative efforts with the adult BMT program at Mayo Clinic, shared inpatient and night call responsibilities on the BMT service, and development of a translational and/or laboratory research program in a field relevant to stem cell transplantation.   Teaching responsibilities may include medical students from the University of Arizona and Mayo Medical School, as well as Phoenix Children’s residents and Hem/Onc fellows. Qualified candidates should have a strong interest in mentoring and program development, be academically productive, and must be board certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties in Pediatrics, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology subspecialty and have additional training or experience in stem cell transplantation.

 

The pediatric BMT Program is jointly FACT accredited with the adult BMT program at Mayo Clinic Arizona and has been operational since 2003. Clinical pediatric care is provided at Phoenix Children’s Hospital in a state of the art facility opened in 2009. The combined Mayo Clinic adult and PCH pediatric BMT program has 10 allogeneic transplant faculty members, with four faculty members currently in Pediatrics. The pediatric program currently performs approximately 45- 50 transplants annually, including autologous, related allogeneic, haplo, and alternative donor transplants, and manages an additional 8-10 CAR-T pre-B-cell ALL patients. The combined adult and pediatric BMT program have excellent survival rates, with the program receiving a +1 rating from the CIBMTR for the outcomes reported in 2018 and 2019. The pediatric BMT program is a COG approved transplant site, and actively participates in cooperative group trials through the PBTCT, the PIDTC, and the Sickle Cell consortium, as well as running several institution investigator-initiated trials. The Pediatric BMT team is a multidisciplinary team, committed to providing state-of-the-art care to the patients of the Southwest as well as to patients from out-of-state and international locations.

 

The research focus of the BMT Program includes acute leukemia, myeloproliferative disorders, transplant for hemoglobinopathies and immune deficiencies, chronic GVHD, survivorship and cellular therapies. The Children’s Blood and Cancer Division at Phoenix Children’s Hospital sees over 370 new oncology patients per year, and has additional active clinical and laboratory research programs in oncology, neuro-oncology, survivorship, hemophilia, and phase I/phase II investigational drug development.

There is an ACMG approved fellowship program in pediatric hematology/oncology, with affiliations with the Mayo Clinic, the Arizona Cancer Center, and the University of Arizona.

Phoenix Children’s Hospital, the only freestanding Children’s Hospital in Arizona, houses a designated wing with 16 HEPA Filtered, positive pressure rooms for particularly immune-deficient patients.

PCH is a comprehensive tertiary and quaternary care center that also serves as a primary pediatric teaching facility for University of Arizona and the Mayo Clinic Arizona medical students and has residency programs in Pediatrics and Medicine/Pediatrics.
