The Department of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Children’s Minnesota is seeking Physicians who would be interested in providing Pediatric Hem/Onc overnight (Moonlighting) coverage.
Overview: The Department of Hematology/Oncology at Children's Minnesota provides care for children of all ages with all types of malignancies including brain tumors, solid tumors, and leukemia; and blood disorders such as sickle cell disease, bleeding disorders, and anemia. The Cancer and Blood Disorders program focuses on providing well-coordinated knowledge-driven clinical care.
To better serve our patients during the overnight hours, Children’s has made the decision to staff Physicians on-campus 24/7. To implement this exciting care model a pool of Moonlighters need to be hired. This is an exciting opportunity to work with the largest Pediatric Hem/Onc provider in the region and care for the most amazing people on earth.
We are looking for Physicians with an interest in overnight shifts and providing Pediatric Hem/Onc care.
7 PM – 7 AM Mon-Fri, 5 PM – 8 AM Sat-Sun.
Open scheduling available: No minimum or maximum shifts per month.
A backup Staff MD is available for questions all hours.
Face-to-face sign-in with Hem/Onc team at the beginning of the shift and sign-out at end of shift.
Respond to answering service calls from patients and families. (A backup MD is available for questions 24/7.)
Provide acute care for all inpatients on the CBD inpatient service.
Discuss potentially deteriorating patients with CBD rounder and PICU attending if necessary.
Transfer patients to PICU as necessary.
Accept ICU transfers after discussion with PICU attending.
Discuss new oncology patients with the CBD Backup MD.
Respond to calls from ED about established patients.
Assess established patient in ED with ED staff if needed.
Accountabilities for inpatient management including;
Sign-out rounds from day team to moonlighter
Assess and monitor potentially deteriorating throughout shift
Respond to nursing questions and concerns throughout shift
Management of real time issues - ie: lab results, I/Os, scans, etc.
Prepare patients for surgery & procedures:
review AM labs
order transfusions & electrolyte replacements
Admission management for Pre-Chemo/hydration.
Perform assessments and complete documentation:
Patient assessments as progress notes
H & P for ED or direct admissions
Discharge patients when indicated.
Prepare charts for following day
Respond to calls from other inpatient units.
Summarize external calls as a sign-out email to CBD team at end of shift.
Bill all notes as appropriate.
Who we are looking for:
We are open to Physicians with any Pediatric background interested in providing Pediatric Hem/Onc care. Non Hem/Onc trained Physicians would participate in a well planned training program to build the foundational skills needed for the role. Current Pediatric Hem/Onc Fellows are encouraged to apply.
Active Minnesota M.D. or D.O. medical license or eligibility.
Board Eligible/Certified in Pediatrics.
Active DEA Registration.
Children’s Minnesota Hospital privileges or ability to obtain privileges.
